Measuring ring size at home
There are many tips online on how to measure your ring size at home. You may have even heard of methods like using pieces of string. The reality is that all these methods are extremely inaccurate and can show completely distorted results, which would be unfortunate, especially when you are planning a surprise proposal.
How do we know this? Simply because we have tried and tested them ourselves. At LV’57 Diamond, we want to give you the most honest advice so you have less to worry about when you don’t know the exact size.
here below we offer you some examples of how it is best to find out the size of our ring correctly:
Remember:
- You should always try your measurement three or four times for better accuracy.
- Your fingers tend to swell in the day and are larger towards the evening. To avoid any .ndiscomfort, we recommend you measure your fingers in the evening.
- Ring size may also vary according to temperature. Cold weather can make your fingers slightly shrink in size.
- If your measurement falls between two sizes, always opt for the larger size to ensure better comfort.
Use a ring you already own:
The first method is to measure a ring that already fits your finger. If your existing ring fits you well, your new one should too, provided your measurement is correct.
1. Find a ring that fits comfortably without being too loose. Choose one that you wear on the same finger you will wear the new ring on for best results. Do not choose a distorted, ornate or wide-banded ring, as this will result in inaccurate measurements.
2. Print the ring size cutout below in A4. Check that the document is scaled to 100%.
3. Cut the image as printed into a cone shape. Carefully glue the gray hatched ear under the opposite side so that the two edges overlap perfectly. We recommend using glue or double-sided tape. You will find arrows on both sides of the size. Be sure to make these arrows meet for better accuracy.
4. You will end up with a cone-shaped paper cutout. Slide the ring along the cone until it sits perfectly. Your size will be indicated on the first line the ring reaches.
5. If your ring is between two sizes, for example “Q,R” you can order a half size. If you are planning a proposal, however, we recommend you opt for the largest size.
6. Please note that these home measurements are for guidance only as they may have inaccurate results if not measured properly. Printable Ring Sizer

What if I’m planning a surprise gift or proposal?
Ask a close friend or family member:
Close friends or family members can help, or at least give you a good indication of your partner’s ring size.
Measure a ring you already own:
It is important to use a ring that is usually worn on the finger you want to measure, especially if you are looking for an engagement ring.
However, if you’re worried your partner might notice a missing ring, you can also try measuring it at home using our printable ring size cutout and following the instructions above. Note that any manual method to determine ring size can lead to inaccuracies.
Remember:
– If you do not know the ring size of the person you are purchasing an engagement ring for, please select “Don’t Know” when proceeding with your purchase and we will make your ring to a standard size.
– The standard ring size for women is L to M and for men Q to S.
– If you are hesitating between two sizes, the rule of thumb is to always aim for the larger one, as it will be easier to make a smaller ring than a larger one if you make a mistake.
– Engagement rings are very heavy due to the weight of the stone. This means that a very loose fit can cause the top half of the ring to slide down.
FAQs:
How tight should a ring be?
We suggest that your ring fits comfortably on your finger without pinching the skin. The ring should be tight enough that it won’t turn on its own, but you should be able to slip it over your finger easily. Very heavy designs, such as engagement rings, are more likely to move on your finger if they are too wide. Also, your fingers tend to swell when it’s warmer, so it’s important not to choose a size that’s too tight.
Can you make a bigger ring if the size is wrong?
Of course! At LV’57Diamonds, we offer free ring resizing up to 30 days after you receive your ring. We can add metal to a ring and increase it by up to two sizes. Anything above will need to be changed. Certain full designs such as eternity or custom designs cannot be resized and will also need to be exchanged for a larger ring size.
